Different Ways Families Spend Christmas In Portland Oregon

There are many ways for families to enjoy the Christmas season in Portland, Oregon that are sure to capture the heart of the young and young at heart. Many towns all over the country have Christmas parades but Portland has a very unique Christmas Ship Parade. This event takes place on the Columbia and Willamette rivers. Some 50 to 60 boats specially decorated with lights ply the waters each year.

Another special place is the Portland Zoo which turns into a spectacular wonderland featuring lighted train rides and zoo animals dressed in costumes befitting the season. A special highlight is the polar bears birthday party. Visitors have the opportunity to watch twin polar bears, Conrad and Tasul eating and playing with ice cakes.

The Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Courthouse Square is an annual event taking place the day after Thanksgiving. Prior to the actual lighting of the 70 foot tree is a parade accompanied by Santa Claus and bands including one composed only of tuba players as the tree makes its way to the square. During the tree lighting ceremony, spectators are afforded the opportunity to join in a sing-a-long featuring traditional carols as well as secular Christmas songs.
